The backward loop cast on is perfect for buttonholes, thumb gussets or any time stitches must be cast on within a garment. Although it is loose and somewhat unsubstantial, its construction allows you to easily cast on stitches within a row.

Yes, the method is the same on a purl row. So happy you are knitting a sweater!!!!!
My pattern calls for also casting on using this method on a purl row. Is it done the same way?
Thank you for your amazing videos. They’ve given me the courage to knit a cardigan!
Thanks so much for taking the time to write your kind words:)
I can’t say anything but how helpful you are for all my knitting projects. Clear speech, great demonstration, unhurried, I am so thankful for your service. Please do not ever play any music in the background. It distracts one from the instruction. Thank you again. S . Johnson
